Week 2, Do you think comics are a
children’s or adult genre/media?
In my case or opinion I would say it should
be both children and adults, reasons is that because the comics varies in the
genres that readers appeal to. To some say that it really appeals to children
in some way, reasons is that for example Tintin comics in a majority in the old
generation children read the comics due to its mix genres its character traits,
themes, plots and it really puts the children into their seats just continue
reading and thus it puts their imaginations into use and reflect on them or
apply into their playful life.
As to the adults in my opinion they would
still read comics either to reflect during their childhood days when they were
reading the comics. But to some adults to them it would be just childish and
embarrassing to read comics. But again it varies on the person’s personal
interests and lifestyle. For example in Japan comics or called manga from what
I have observed while I was in Japan adults as to say even elderly people still
read comics. Why is that? Could it be that even at the later age comics would
still appeal to them, and also could it be it’s a good time waster for
them? Or to them they would still feel
they’re still children at heart?
And lastly overall in my opinion comics wouldn’t
just appeal to children and also to adults because the comics over the years
still developing into fine stories that appeals to the both adult and children.
Feel free add or comment thanks.
Yes, good point made. We might have to distinguish between comics, Some are clearly aimed at children and are of little interest to adults. Others, like Tintin, seem to have a wider audience intended, not just children. Was Herge aiming at a universal appeal?
ReplyDeleteI think it's true too that comics isn't something that only appeals or should be targeted to children. Considering how it's adults that create comics in the first place, there are probably more ideas in comics that adults are more likely to understand than children.
ReplyDeleteAs you've pointed out, things like manga are something that is culturally embedded and that no matter what age you are, comics will always be available to you. The genre and plot of comics and manga varies greatly from fantasy to sports to politics. There is no topic comics can't cover. And as we grow up, comics like Tintin which we've read when we're younger takes on a whole different meaning when we're adults. From a simple adventure story to a deep socio-cultural satire and commentary.
In the great words of Sakata Gintoki, "What am I doing, reading Jump at my age? Well, a man remains a boy until his death…"
